Conference / City as Project

The Baumeister & Topos Cities Initiative, an international, cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary initiative will bring together landscape architecture and architecture, urban design, and planning and development in a broad social context. The urban future is a much-discussed issue. The first event of this initiative is the one-day conference Instead of offering a very generic “good ideas for cities” programme, we wish to highlight four issues that we perceive as being indicative of any future urban development.

• Resilient City: How can we strengthen the resilience of cities?

Martin Knuijt, OKRA Landscape Architects, Rotterdam
Gena Wirth, Scape / Landscape Architecture, New York

• Mobile City: How can we come to terms with the issue of how to maintain individual mobility?

Kees Christiaanse, ETH Zürich, KCAP Architects&Planners

•  Creative City: How does the city become a creative cluster with a sound economic basis?

Urs Kumberger, Teleinternetcafe Architektur und Urbanismus, Berlin
Karsten Schmitz, initiator creative quarter Leipzig
Freek Persyn, 51N4E Architects, Brüssel
Clark Parsons, Berlin School of Creative Leadership

• Open City: How we can get closer to the ideal of the “open city”?

Richard Sennet, sociologist, New York und London

The conference is part of the “Metropolitan Solutions” conference trade show, a platform for exchange on the urban future, which will be held from 20 to 22 May in Berlin.
